The differences between Solid and Engineered Flooring.

There are many types of flooring in the shops which you might consider, from stone floors to carpets. For those who are looking for a unique look and a type of flooring which is able to make an instant impression, wood flooring is a top consideration. However, not all wood flooring are alike. I fact, there are two main types, solid and engineered.

Here is just a few differences between solid and engineered flooring:

  • Each plank of solid wood flooring is made from complete wood without any additional materials. The plank is covered in a thin layer of coating to protect the wood from minor damage and gives the wood its desired finish. Whereas engineered wood flooring  is made from real wood together with MDF and Plywood. The use of these three materials together is why this type of floor is called engineered. Similar to the solid wood flooring, each plank is covered in a thin layer of coating to protect the wood.
  • Because solid wood flooring is made from complete wood, many owners regard solid flooring as extra strong which leads to extended longevity. Further more, the use of real wood means that owners are able to sand the floor which can extend its longevity even further. Also in some cases,  the use of solid flooring may cause a problem. Solid flooring may react to temperature fluctuations by expanding or shrinking. Engineered flooring will not react in the same manner.

Before buying your wood flooring, research which wood flooring is the most suitable for you and your surface.

Have a good day. :)

Hardwood flooring is still going strong.

Stats show that hardwood flooring and real wood floors are still popular despite recession. Hardwood, solid oak flooring, engineered wood flooring and solid wood flooring are all long-lasting choices of flooring all around the world. Increasing amounts of people are still replacing the carpets in their homes with hardwood flooring.  Despite the expense involved in purchasing a hardwood floor in the midst of a tough economic climate. Though consumers are looking to reduce their outgoings as much as possible, industry experts say that people are still purchasing solid oak wood flooring because they see it as a long-term investment in their property, which will pay for itself over. Also, solid oak flooring is very much in fashion in the interior design world, primarily because wood flooring is a very versatile choice of flooring and suits a variety of homes and decor. Carpet doesn’t last as long as wood flooring, it wears out very easily and soon looks shabby. People still would rather choose a more expensive choice of flooring that stands the test of time over a cheaper, less hard wearing product.

The great things about Hardwood flooring.

There are so many advantages of hardwood flooring, here are just a few:

  • It increases the value of the property. The reason for this is  the initial cost it will take to have hardwood floors installed.
  • Harwood flooring is durable and easy to repair. When scratched, you don’t always have to replace it. All it needs in sanding down and then re-staining.
  • Your hardwood flooring can be customized. You can play around with the sheen and the type of hardwood, there are a lot of different colours and designs.
  • Your property will also look elegant!

Have a good day! :)

Different kinds of interior doors.

There are so many different types of interior doors. Interior hinged doors, internal folding doors, interior concertina doors, interior bi-folding doors and internal sliding door. But how do you know which type is best for you?. Hopefully this might help you a bit.

Interior hinged doors shut into the doorway and only open one way.

Internal folding doors are opposite to hinged doors, they only open inwards.

Interior concertina doors are also known as “sliding folding doors”. They are split into panels which bunch up when you open them. This type of doors are great for dividing rooms.

Interior bi-folding doors fold once in the centre but are fixed in  channel. A down side to these are that they stack out in the room, they are great for large rooms.

Internal sliding door is a sliding door which has one or more overlapping panels in grooves next to one another.

Hope this has helped!. Have a good day!!

Wood flooring finishes

Surface, wax or an acrylic finish, which one is it to be?

We all know that different wood flooring finishes have a huge impact on the way your wood flooring will look in a few years. So choosing the suitable finish is important.

The surface finish is water-resistant and mega durable. So if you have any spills, it won’t affect your lovely new floors!. Also the coating stays on the surface of the wood so it becomes like  protective glove. Whereas the wax coating soaks into your flooring which becomes a penetrating seal. This finish also has a low-gloss satin sheen However, the acrylic finish is injected into the wood to create a super-hard wood floor. You will mostly find that shops and restaurants use the acrylic finish.

All of the finishes are also environmentally safe, which is huge a bonus!

I hope I’ve helped you to choose the right finish for you!

Benefits of Solid Wood Flooring (written by an EX vacuum salesman!!)

Choosing solid wood flooring today is a great choice. Look at the benefits and then decide which one to choose:

  • It will save you money – No more carpets!

How many of us have bought a house and ripped out the worn out carpet that was left by the previous owners. Gone to the local carpet shop and cursed at the prices of even the cheapest of carpets. A quick search on the internet and you will find that they are not cheap. I found a major high street chain selling it “FROM ONLY” £7.99 per sqm. You are then strongly advised to buy underlay at £6.99 per sqm. That’s £14.98 per sqm for a product that will probably need replacing within 5 years. Ok, I am going to get all the professional sales people now telling me that oak flooring costs from £21.50 per sqm + 44 pence per sqm for underlay and that is more expensive! Yes, I know. But it will last a lifetime! and that’s longer than 5 years!!! So in 10 years time when you are replacing that cheap and nasty characterless carpet for the third time and you have now had to spend the equivalent of £44.94 per sqm (and that’s not counting inflation!) – just stop and think about it.

  • It will add value to your property – Wooden flooring is said to add between 5 and 10% to the value of your home.

Many experts in the know will tell you that solid hardwood flooring will add value to your property and will sell your house quicker. There is something about the style, feel and warmth of a wood floor that makes prospective buyers instantly love your home as soon as they open the front door.

  • Durable and hard-wearing – Carpets show signs of ageing quickly.

No matter how much care you take of your carpet it wears when you walk on it. I remember having to take my shoes off at the door so we wouldn’t get the carpet dirty! The problem is – it still does. After a while you have to start moving the furniture to hide the stains caused by spilt drinks or that mark that no matter how much you shampoo will not come out. Solid wood will stand up to the heavy traffic of feet day after day and if you spill a glass of red wine there will be no rushing to the cupboards to find the expensive bottle of some man-made chemical and spend 20 minutes on your hands and knees cursing and getting tennis elbow (we have all done it).

  • Healthier – No more dust mites, fleas and other parasites.

If, like me you suffer from asthma and eczema, these critters are your worst nightmare. They live in your carpet and wait for you to lie down in front of the television before they attack in their millions and leave you scratching and wheezing and no amount of vacuuming will get rid of them. A varnished hardwood floor will give these predators nowhere to hide.

This article is written in an anti-carpet way and I would like to see all the carpet sales people of the world comment on why I am wrong in praising wood flooring this way. The trouble is they won’t because although this is very tongue in cheek, the article raises very valued points about the benefits of solid wood flooring that cannot be denied
